tabWhat do we do?
The Air Force ADR Program Office in the Office of the General Counsel coordinates and promotes the use of alternative dispute resolution methods (i.e. mediation, facilitation) to resolve disputes rather than using traditional administrative processes or litigation. Our office also works with the Air Force Negotiation Center of Excellence to promote interest-based negotiation and conflict resolution skills Air Force-wide as part of an integrated conflict management system. As part of this effort, we conduct a variety of seminars, conferences, and training events. Our program has won six national awards for excellence.
tabWho are we looking for?
The Air Force Alternative Dispute resolution program seeks senior undergraduate or graduate students who are highly-motivated and pro-active with the ability to work well in a dynamic office environment. Students should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, should have knowledge of MS office (including Power Point), and MS outlook, and be able to execute program management responsibilities. Previous federal government experience is a plus, but not required.
tabWhat are they saying about us?
"My stint with SAF/GCD taught me valuable lessons about working for the Government and more specifically working for DoD. I feel much more comfortable interacting with military officers of any rank and feel like my understanding of the the Department of Defense is going to be utilized for the rest of my life. If there is one thing that I liked best about the program, would be the camaraderie of the people that I worked with, and the way that the program allows us to really be creative in how we can assist the Air Force in dealing with resolving disputes in a better, and more helpful way."

"I worked as a co-op at SAF/GCD for a little over a year and gained a great deal from the experience. I served as the Assistant Program Manager for Acquisition and spent most of my time developing training seminars for Air Force personnel. Much of the work allowed me to think and write creatively, and I could take a leadership role in many of the projects undertaken by the office. I also had the opportunity to travel to Air Force bases in Ohio, Florida, and California. The job was very enjoyable and enabled me to develop skills that will serve me well in my career."
tabStudent Experience
Under the Deputy General Counsel for Dispute Resolution, students in our office ("SCEPs" or "Co-Ops") work to ensure the successful execution of the program's goals and mission. Assignments of each co-op are dependent upon the student's career interest, experience, and training. Co-ops make up the staff of the ADR Program with functions ranging from creating office management strategies, and maintaining the ADR program budgets, to contracting, website development, statistical program analysis, and development of negotiation training scenarios. As part of the professional staff, students frequently interact with high-ranking military and civilian personnel both in side and outside of DoD. In addition, there are opportunities for professional training and travel.
tabBenefits
Salary starts at the GS-5 level for undergraduates and GS-7 for graduate students with promotion potential to GS-9.  Annual and sick leave, a federal health and retirement package and public transportation benefits are included. Co-ops are required to work a minimum of 30 hours a week (40 during the summer), but there is flexibility to meet requirements of papers and exams.
